This is a really simple DIY armpit detox without clay. Many people use a armpit detox as a way to transition from an aluminum based antiperspirant to an all natural deodorant during the cooler winter months. However, there are many reasons and benefits to using a DIY armpit detox without clay (or with clay) during winter, spring, summer, or fall.
There is evidence that a high skin pH underneath the arm promotes the growth of several microorganisms that produce odors. The normal pH of the armpit is around 5.8 in men and 6.0 in women. Armpit sweat causes the pH to creep toward a pH of 7. So, unlike bacteria in the mouth that thrives at a lower pH, our armpit bacteria thrives at a higher pH.
Armpit detox products are becoming very popular. In fact, when shopping online, you can choose from a variety of armpit scrubs, prebiotic armpit cleansing clays, and armpit mask. A DIY armpit detox without clay can be used all year long for (1) neutralizing persistent underarm odor, (2) rebalancing underarm pH, (3) retarding bacteria growth, and (4) eliminating deodorant product buildup.
Ingredients
This DIY armpit detox without clay is made with 4 ingredients including cornstarch, lavender powder, citric acid, and tea tree essential oil.
1. Cornstarch
Cornstarch powder has a pH between 3.0 – 6.0. Therefore, it is an ideal ingredient to use in this DIY armpit detox without clay. It is a natural thickening agent that can be used as a substitution for a clay. When mixed with water alone, it becomes globby and pasty. It is therefore ineffective for using under the arm with this combination alone.
2. Lavender Powder
Lavender powder is made from dried lavender buds. Lavender is an astringent that has antibacterial properties which makes it an ideal addition to this DIY armpit detox without clay. During the essential oil making process, the lavender also produces something called a Lavender hydrosol that has a pH of 5. So, when using lavender powder, you can capture the sweet aroma and antibacterial properties of the essential oil and in theory benefit from the lavender solution that is made when mixing. You can make your own lavender powder by grinding the lavender buds. This ingredient can also be used to make the exfoliation DIY lavender soap.
3. Citric Acid
Citric acid is used in all sorts of things including our food and drinks. It is also often used in cosmetics, skincare products, and laundry detergents including the DIY laundry detergent powder. It is incorporated into this DIY armpit detox without clay to work along with the cornstarch to lower the pH.
4. Tea Tree Essential Oil
Tea tree essential oil has antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties. It is used in this DIY armpit detox without clay to destroy residual microbes found underneath the arm after washing. This distinctly fragrant essential oil is a particularly useful addition for anyone that has underarm odor because it can not only rid the underarm of bacteria, it can also leave behind its fragrant aroma.
DIY Armpit Detox:
Instructions:
- Place the cornstarch, lavender powder, and citric acid together in a small container with a lid.
- Combine the powders well being careful to remove any lumps.
- Now add and mix the tea tree oil into the powder.
How To Use:
- Start by washing underneath your armpits with soap and water.
- After rinsing away the soap and water, apply the DIY armpit detox without clay.
- Simply dip the ends of your wet index finger and middle finger into the armpit detox mixture. Then rub it generously underneath your armpits.
- It will go on like a thin solution. However, it works well leaving your armpits fresh and ready for a fresh deodorant application.
- Let the armpit detox remain underneath your armpits for about 5 minutes before rinsing it off with warm water.
- Pat dry. Then, apply the DIY deodorant stick or DIY deodorant cream.
Another Method:
To get a thicker coating underneath your arm in the bath tub, you can premeasure the armpit detox powder and water. This may not be an effective method when you are taking a shower.
- Place 1/2 teaspoon of the powder in a small container.
- Then add 1/4 teaspoon of water to the container.
- Stir the mixture with your fingers and then apply a thin layer underneath both armpits. Allow to dry.
When rubbed with the correct ratio of powder to water, the armpit detox mixture will still be a thin coat. However, once dried, you will be able to see that the skin has been covered well as it turns into a slightly thickened white coat. I hope you enjoy making and using this DIY armpit detox without clay.
